A distinguished expression of single-vineyard Hunter Valley Semillon shaped by heritage, site character and meticulous winemaking – with the 2018 vintage delivering concentration, elegance and remarkable longevity. The Stevens Semillon holds a special place within the Tyrrell’s portfolio, first produced in 1993 from fruit grown by Neil and Bernadette Stevens. Its success inspired Bruce Tyrrell to establish a dedicated range of single-site wines, celebrating the unique character of individual Hunter Valley vineyards. Located on a gentle hillside along Marrowbone Road near Cessnock, the Stevens Vineyard is Tyrrell’s southernmost Semillon site, with the oldest dry-grown vines dating back to 1911. These venerable vines yield fruit of exceptional intensity and structure, forming the foundation for a Semillon that beautifully reflects both vineyard pedigree and vintage conditions. The 2018 season proved an outstanding year for Hunter Valley Semillon, with warm, dry conditions producing small crops of concentrated fruit and impressive flavour depth. Displays a pale straw hue with lifted aromatics of lemon curd and vibrant citrus layered with delicate floral notes and a subtle smoky nuance. A fine mineral edge adds complexity and a sense of place. The palate is tightly structured yet beautifully balanced, revealing a vibrant citrus core framed by notes of sweet pear and white peach that reflect the warmth of the vintage. Bright acidity and a sherbet-like citrus energy carry the wine with precision, while the texture remains soft, clean and remarkably persistent. The result is a Semillon of poise, intensity and classic Hunter Valley character. A superb companion for fresh seafood, oysters, delicate fish dishes or light poultry preparations, while its vibrant acidity also makes it an exceptional aperitif. Now entering a beautiful drinking window, the wine shows remarkable brightness and complexity while continuing to evolve gracefully. With its balance and structure, it will develop further honeyed, toasty and mineral nuances over the next five to ten years, rewarding patient cellaring.

Few names are as woven into Australia’s wine story as Tyrrell’s. Founded in 1858 by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell, the family planted their first Shiraz and Semillon vines in the Hunter Valley — beginning a legacy that now spans over 160 years and five generations.
Still family-owned and operated, Tyrrell’s remains a true pioneer of Australian winemaking. From the creation of the iconic Vat 1 Semillon to the groundbreaking Vat 47 Chardonnay, Vat 8 Shiraz Cabernet and Vat 9 Shiraz, their wines have become benchmarks of quality and character — earning more than 5,000 awards along the way.
The estate’s vineyards stretch across the Hunter Valley and into Heathcote, Victoria, with some vines over a century old. Sustainability and stewardship are central to their philosophy, reflected in significant reductions in emissions and a deep respect for the land that continues to nurture their craft.
Visitors to the historic Pokolbin winery can experience guided tastings, tours, and a tangible connection to Australia’s winemaking heritage — where every bottle tells a story of place, patience, and passion.
Pioneers then. Perfectionists now.
