The Varney story began, quite literally, as a tonne for fun. Over a decade ago, winemaker Alan Varney set out to make his own style of wines from some of his favourite vineyards in McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. What started as a side project quickly grew into a small, family-run label — one now housed in a beautifully restored 1870s limestone barn and eco-conscious winery at the Gateway to McLaren Vale.

Years spent working with top vineyards across the region gave Alan a deep connection to place and people. Many of the growers behind Varney Wines are long-time friends and trusted collaborators — a reflection of the brand’s belief that great wine begins with great fruit. The result is a collection of wines built on balance, depth, and a deep respect for the land.

In the winery, Alan blends intuition with experience. His hands-on approach ranges from wild yeast fermentations and whole-bunch additions to carbonic maceration and gentle foot treading — guided always by one principle: whatever the fruit calls for.
