A beautifully composed Barossa GSM that leans into elegance, perfume and precision, this Red GSM sits at the heart of Alex Head’s winemaking philosophy. Founded in 2006, Head Wines has built its reputation on thoughtful, site-driven Rhône varietals from the Barossa and Eden Valleys, and this traditional blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro is a clear expression of that mission. All fruit is picked on the cusp of ripeness, with a portion of whole bunches retained during fermentation to enhance freshness, structure and aromatic lift. The nose is immediately engaging, offering dark berry fruit, olive tapenade and subtle roasted nut characters — savoury, complex and quietly alluring. On the palate, vibrant red and dark fruits are framed by crisp acidity and fine structure, giving the wine both energy and depth. There’s excellent fruit intensity here, balanced by a long, textured finish that makes it unmistakably food-friendly. It’s a wine that feels composed and purposeful, delivering flavour without weight. Drinking beautifully now, yet with the balance and structure to develop gracefully with medium term cellaring. Serve alongside game dishes such as venison or moose, or dishes centred around lamb, goat or mutton — much like a great southern Rhône, it truly comes into its own at the table.
