An absolute gem of a wine, this Limited Release Grenache is crafted from some of McLaren Vale’s most treasured old vines, with fruit sourced from 80-year-old Grenache plantings. Only the most pristine bunches were hand-picked and set aside, resulting in just two barrels produced — a true expression of boutique winemaking at its most focused and deliberate. Handled gently at every stage, the wine required minimal intervention, allowing the exceptional quality of the fruit to speak clearly. After 12 months of close observation, it was hand-bottled at the moment where creaminess and oak integration were perfectly in sync. In the glass, the wine shows brilliant colour vibrancy, immediately drawing the eye. The nose is lifted and expressive, bursting with cherry ripe and raspberry, complemented by subtle notes of spiced mocha and a delicate floral finish. On the palate, refinement takes centre stage. A mouth-filling yet elegant texture of silk unfolds, carrying flavours of ripe raspberry and gentle creaminess. The balance between purity of fruit and understated oak is beautifully judged, giving the wine both immediate charm and quiet depth. Drinking beautifully now, yet with the structure and balance to continue evolving gracefully for another few years. A natural match for meatballs, delicate game dishes or a classic Shepherd’s Pie, where its elegance and savoury undertones truly shine. A rare and refined Grenache — expressive, graceful and unmistakably Ortus.

Ortus Wines is a boutique, mother-and-daughter-owned winery in Willunga, at the southern edge of McLaren Vale. Established in 2011, Ortus focuses on small-batch, handcrafted wines made from their own estate vineyard and premium fruit sourced from some of South Australia’s top regions. Fittingly, the name “Ortus” means new beginnings — but the family roots run deep.
Julie and Paige Cooper are continuing a legacy that began in the 1800s with the Bittner family — Prussian immigrants and barrel makers who once tended vines in the Barossa Valley. Their motto, “Nothing without labour,” remains the driving force behind Ortus today. Together, Julie’s business expertise and Paige’s formal winemaking training make Ortus one of Australia’s only true mother-and-daughter wine ventures — and a proudly hands-on one at that.
The wines are crafted in limited volumes — sometimes from just two barrels — ensuring exceptional detail, purity, and expressive regional character. Rich, soulful red wines come from their McLaren Vale vineyard, including Shiraz, Grenache from century-old vines, Cabernet and Tempranillo. Crisp, elegant whites are sourced from cooler sites in the Adelaide Hills and Clare Valley, and a sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir adds celebratory flair to the range.
Two women, one family legacy - revived and reimagined.
