Described as a Barossa Shiraz in full flight and given 93pts by The Wine Front, this true boutique, small-batch wine will surely blow you away. Sigurd Wines is named after Winemaker Dan Graham’s Great Grandfather who travelled from Rjukan, Norway to Australia to find work back in 1914.
And after enlisting with the Aussies in WW1 for quick access to citizenship and getting shot twice on the front lines in France, he returned and started his life Downunder. And we dare to say that the small-batch wines beautifully crafted by Dan Graham truly lives up to this brave, adventurous and fiery heritage.
Dan himself learned his trade in the cellar of big brand Jacobs Creek, but maybe exactly due to his exploring nature this Sigurd Syrah 2016 could not be a more different expression of the Barossa. The grapes have been farmed organically at a small Barossa vineyard since 2014, with the resulting fruit from this site being of excellent quality.
The wines are made with minimal additions, partially whole bunch fermented and aged in Russian oak hogheads, then hand-bottled and wax capped, giving them a true boutique expression.
Aromas of deep blueberry, leathery pine needle, espresso and clove spice will open for a palate filled with great concentration and characters of dark fruit, cracked pepper and soft coffee ground tannins.
A slurpy, hearty and elegant Barossa Syrah that is wicked to drink with great length.
Perfect with lamb chops or beef ribs.
Sigurd Wines, a beloved brand among customers, has released a new vintage Syrah that is sure to impress. This exquisite dry red wine boasts a medium body and a vibrant profile of wild blueberries, held together by a subtle hint of cedary oak. Despite being a bright and balanced offering for the Barossa, it doesn’t come across as too showy, and the fruit concentration continues to shine through on the palate, thanks to a firm and silky tannin profile. The wine is made by fermenting for 20 days with roughly 20% whole bunch and a small addition of whole bunch Viognier (around 3%). This Syrah pairs beautifully with a veal rack featuring a fresh herb crust and duck fat potatoes. You can enjoy it right away, or wait for up to 13 years, but it’s recommended to decant it an hour or so beforehand regardless of when you choose to indulge.
