Hunter Valley Semillon has long earned a global reputation for excellence and amazing ageing potential and shaped by a top tier producer like Tyrrell’s you know the grapes are in good hands. Made from some of their top Semillon vineyards around the Hunter where most of the grapes are dry grown and have an average vine age of 40+ years.
The autumn and winter months of 2020 saw the worst drought in a generation be broken with substantial rainfall, which led into an outstanding growing season for the 2021 vintage. A cool summer then gave an even, stress-free ripening with some late heat perfectly timed at the final stages resulting in fruit of wonderful flavours balanced by a high natural acidity. The wine did spend a short amount of time on yeast lees to gain extra complexity and mouth feel, and the result is a textbook Hunter Valley Semillon from an outstanding vintage. The nose is vibrant with an abundance of citrus fruits and floral elements. The palate is medium bodied, yet intense, with great length and a brisk acidity. Drinks well already but can be carefully cellared for at least another 10-15 years.
Serve with prawn ravioli, smoked salmon and other richer seafood dishes, a lemon and garlic roast chicken, or simply a selection of Cheddar, Gouda or Manchego style cheeses.
