The Rufus Stone range from Tyrrell?s has long been a customer favourite and we are confident this full-bodied 2019 Heathcote Shiraz will follow suit. Established in 1858 by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell, Tyrrell?s Wines is one of Australia?s pre-eminent family-owned wine companies with vineyards extending from their historic home on Broke Road in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales to their Heathcote vineyards in Victoria. Tyrrell?s is home to some of Australia?s most awarded wines including the iconic Vat 1 Semillon, and in the last 40 years, Tyrrell?s has been awarded over 5,000 trophies and medals and been named ?Winery of the Year? in James Halliday?s Australian Wine Companion. Tyrrell?s established their vineyards in Victoria?s Heathcote region in 1994, and with the dry central Victorian climate of cool nights and warm days, their vines now consistently and undoubtedly produce some of the best Shiraz grapes in the country. The wines are deep rich red colour giving early hints at the intensity to come. The nose is full of regional ripe plum, dark cherries with a pinch of white pepper and sweet vanillin. Flavours carry onto a palate of big soft fruit, balanced by regional minerality, elegant oak and natural acid. This is a great example of a classic Heathcote Shiraz – rich full wine with a complex structure and a long fresh finish. The wine drinks beautifully already but will also cellar for another 5-7 years. Pair with a juicy steak, venison or tender lamb.
The Tyrrell’s estate and surrounding area provided the grapes for the Hunter Valley Shiraz, sourced from top blocks with an average vine age of 40 years and predominantly dry grown. Following a severe drought in autumn and winter 2020, the substantial rainfall that ensued resulted in an exceptional growing season for the 2021 vintage. The Hunter Valley Shiraz is crafted to the same exacting standards as the flagship Vat 9 Shiraz. The fruit is destemmed and left uncrushed to maximize the number of whole berries in the fermenter. The wine is aged in large French oak casks to highlight fruit purity and minimize the dominance of oak. This medium-bodied Australian Shiraz exhibits bright red fruit and savory spice aromas on the nose, followed by a palate of primary fruit flavors, soft savory tannins, and refreshing acidity, which add complexity to the wine. With 93 points awarded by James Suckling, this wine can be consumed now but has the potential to age for up to 5 years. It pairs well with pasta, burgers, and light game dishes.
